Mindfulness Counselling done by our Calgary Psychologists is a form of therapy that helps clients learn to have awareness of thoughts, feelings and emotions that arise throughout the day. Sometimes these thoughts and emotions can become distressing. Mindfulness therapy in Calgary helps clients learn to be aware of these thoughts and emotions before they become distressing. When clients can notice emotions rising in their bodies they can learn to sit with the emotion and try to understand what it is about. This process relieves the distressing thought and emotions quicker so that people can no longer have difficult interruptions to their daily life.
Mindfulness therapy accomplishes this by helping clients focus on their breathing and their bodily sensations. Emotions are felt first in the body before they are noticed in the mind. When emotions are felt in the body they are realized quicker. When they are realized quicker, clients can then implement breath work that is taught by one of our Calgary Psychologists. When breath work is used it automatically decreases the fight or flight response that happens in humans when distressing thoughts and emotions arise. When the fight or flight response is decreased the distressing emotions and thoughts decrease and then disappear.
