  • Children & Adolescent Counselling Calgary

Our Calgary Child Psychologists enjoy counselling children and adolescents. Our goal at the start is to create a strong relationship with them so that they can feel relaxed and safe with us so that they can share their current struggles.

With children we look at what areas are causing them distress. We, as Calgary Child Psychologists, observe their behaviour in session. We also assess their behaviour from the point of view of the parents.

Often emotional difficulties mask themselves as physical symptoms for children. When children are struggling with anxiety or depression they may experience:

    • headaches
    • stomach aches
    • body pains (often leg pain)
    • dizziness
    • tiredness

There can often be unhealthy coping mechanisms that children develop to try to ease their anxiety. These behaviours can be:

    • scratching
    • biting self
    • hair pulling
    • crying
    • separation anxiety
    • Anger
    • Withdrawing from friends and family

The goal with children is to work towards behavioural replacement. This is done through the use of a variety of tools and strategies. Once the behaviour has been replaced it is then important to understand the cause of the behaviour so that this new behavioural strategy does not become problematic. We want to ensure we get to the root of their current struggle so that it does not resurface again.

With teenagers we employ a variety of tools. Whether that be a form of art therapy, using mindfulness strategies, or looking at how thoughts may be distorted. All strategies are considered to find the best method for the young client.

When working with a minor in Calgary counselling it is important to note that parental consent must be obtained. We invite parents to be a part of this journey. In the first session we meet with parents to provide them with information. As well, so that they can provide us with information on their child. Collaborative work with the child or adolescent is done to ensure that they feel comfortable with the counselling process.
